2.6/10 (Expert Score)
Product is rated as #22 in category Complete Bikes
After testing the Kink Curb, it became clear that it's an ideal fit for smaller riders, thanks to its 20-inch top tube, which offers a comfortable ride with modern BMX geometry at an affordable price. Nonetheless, Kink should underscore that this model is tailored for entry-level riders, particularly those under 5'3". From my perspective as a taller and more seasoned rider, I found that the bike's low-quality high-tensile steel frame couldn't withstand the stress I applied, a situation in line with its entry-level standing. Despite this, the Kink Curb asserts itself as a fair contender in terms of build quality and cost, presenting itself as a good value and one of the most economical choices on the market.

PROS:
  • Low Price
  • Multiple Colors
  • Good for Small Riders
CONS:
  • Low Quality
  • Single Wall Rims
  • Pressed Headset

The 2024 Kink Curb is a low-quality BMX bike, sitting at the lowest price point within Kink’s 2023 lineup. Crafted entirely from high-tensile steel, with single-wall rims and unsealed bearings, it closely rivals the quality of a Walmart bike, though slightly superior. Weighing in at 27.3 pounds and priced at $299, this model raises questions about its adequacy for aspiring riders. Is the Kink Curb the right choice for you? Stick around as we delve into its specifics, from customization options to its limited color palette. By the end, you’ll gain a comprehensive understanding of its true value.

The Kink Curb: Overview

The 2024 Kink Curb presents itself as an entry-level BMX, balancing cost-effectiveness with the potential for customization. Priced at $299, it’s the most affordable option in Kink’s lineup, appealing to riders on a budget. Despite its weight of 27.3 pounds, it offers some flexibility for personal touches. Although it comes without pegs or hub guards, riders can enhance it with such accessories, albeit separately. Its upgradability is notable; however, be wary of the unsealed bearings which may complicate future enhancements.

Color choices include Matte Midnight Black, Gold Leaf, Alps Blue, and Mika Green, providing a decent array to suit personal tastes. Yet, it’s crucial to consider its single top tube size of 20 inches, designed for riders between five foot and five foot three inches tall. This limitation in size and the bike’s overall construction underscore its position as a starting point for newcomers to BMX, rather than a definitive ride for the experienced or those seeking high-performance durability.

Kink Curb Geometry and Sizing

The 2023 Kink Curb is tailored for a specific demographic, offering a 20-inch top tube size designed optimally for riders between five feet and five feet three inches in height. This sizing is crucial for ensuring a comfortable and effective riding experience, emphasizing the importance of bike size in BMX riding. The bike’s geometry, including a 74.5-degree head tube angle and an 8.5-inch standover height, contributes to a more stable and controlled ride. These dimensions are slightly different from the standard BMX bike, aiming to provide newer riders with a forgiving platform that’s easier to handle.

Top Tube Size Recommended Rider Height
20.00 inches 5’0″ – 5’3″

Understanding the bike’s geometry is essential, as it directly influences how the bike responds to rider inputs. The slightly more mellow head tube angle and lower standover height offer stability and control, which can be particularly beneficial for new riders. It’s a gentle reminder that selecting a BMX bike with the correct size and geometry is not just a matter of comfort but a crucial factor for performance and progression in the sport.

Quality and Durability of the 2024 Kink Curb

The 2024 Kink Curb, with its full high-tensile steel frame, forks, and handlebars, and single-wall rims, is positioned at the entry-level of BMX durability and quality. High-tensile steel, as the material of choice for this model, offers a lower threshold of resilience compared to the more robust chromoly, highlighting a significant consideration for potential buyers. This composition affects the bike’s longevity and performance, particularly under rigorous use.

Component Material Quality Rating
Frame High-Tensile Steel Low
Forks High-Tensile Steel Low
Handlebars High-Tensile Steel Low
Cranks Chromoly Medium
Rims Single-Wall Low

While the Kink Curb features full chromoly cranks, which stand out as a more durable component amidst primarily high-tensile steel parts, the overall quality score of 1.2 out of 10 and a weight limit recommendation of not exceeding 130 pounds indicate its limited suitability. This bike caters to lighter, beginner riders but may not withstand the demands of more aggressive or heavier BMX enthusiasts. The importance of chromoly over high-tensile steel cannot be overstated for those seeking longevity and resilience in their ride, a crucial aspect I emphasize through my match-maker service to find the right BMX bike for each rider’s weight and riding style.

Kink Curb Riding Style: Park, Street, or Dirt?

The 2024 Kink Curb, with its distinct design and construction, offers varied performance across different BMX disciplines. Its scores reflect its capabilities in park, street, and dirt riding, indicating a stronger inclination towards park and dirt. Customizing the Kink Curb can further enhance its suitability for these styles, suggesting that while it may start as a basic model, its potential to adapt should not be underestimated.

Riding Style Score
Street 1
Park 3.93
Dirt 5.2

For those looking to tailor the Kink Curb to specific riding styles, starting with the bike’s inherent strengths in park and dirt is advisable. Upgrades such as sealed bearings, double wall rims, and a stronger chain can significantly improve performance, especially for riders aiming to push their limits in these environments. However, its low street score suggests that extensive modifications would be necessary to make it a viable option for street riding, underlining the importance of considering intended use when selecting this bike.

Warranty

The 2024 Kink Curb does not explicitly mention a warranty within the provided details, underscoring the importance of purchasing from a reputable dealer. I advocate buying from Danscomp due to their exceptional customer care, ensuring support in case of any issues. This recommendation is not just about securing a warranty but also about the confidence in after-sales support, crucial for any BMX enthusiast.

Choosing a trusted shop like Danscomp can significantly enhance your riding experience, offering peace of mind with every purchase. While the warranty specifics for the Kink Curb remain unmentioned, the emphasis on buying from a reliable source cannot be overstated.

Expert Opinion

The Kink Curb is definitely a low price bike. And with that comes lower quality components. Recently kink has lowered the price from $379 down to $299. Which makes this bike a much better value. I recommend the Kink Curb for smaller riders, who don’t weigh very much, as bigger riders will not fit on the top tube and will put more stress on the low quality high, tensile steel.

Yes, the kink curb is a cheap bike. And yes, the kink curb is a low quality bike. But for someone who just wants to get a BMX bike and start riding BMX you can do so with the curb at a very affordable price.
